Race Report

Askern RSC IOM Open and Round 3, MYA Northern Winter Series

Sunday 6th January 2019

This event, and probably a half decent weather forecast attracted a pleasing number of visitors from around the District and with a good entry from the home club, 19 boats assembled in the pit area outside the Lakeside café.

Race Officer Brian Cheetham got us started promptly on a triangle / sausage course which used most of the length of the lake – a good course that provided plenty of close racing. Winds started quite light, just enough, and filled in at times later in the day to give some lively sailing towards the top of No1.

Early notable performances came from Derek Priestley who won the first 4 races and then another before the lunch break, Askern member Dave Darwell who put together a sequence of 3 second places and two firsts after a quiet first race and David Foster had a couple of second places early on and then popped up with two wins before the lunchbreak which came after 9 races. Damian Ackroyd, Craig Rastrick and Dave Rigby also put in some very useful results during the morning.

A noticeable feature of the day was the fleet spread, or lack of it; racing was close from front to back and the gap between first and last boats, pleasingly short, so Mr Cheetham, a hard task master and a good day, gave the fleet no chance to hang around. After a minimalist lunch break, he had us all back on the water.

Craig Rastrick started the afternoon with a win, Dave Darwell put in a string of good finishes, including 3 wins, Derek P had another win, David Foster continued to put in good results and in the 16th and final race, another local skipper, Dave Rigby popped up with win.

Despite some skippers lacking experience (their own definition) racing was very well disciplined, there wasn’t a lot of contact and when there was, people did their turns ungrudgingly. That and winter blue skies and 16 races in the day made for a thoroughly pleasant days sailing.

Paul Rudkin did his usual speedy job with the results before people set off for home with a win for Dave Darwell on 28 points, Derek Priestley in second on 32 points, Craig Rastrick, 44, David Foster, 47 and Dave Rigby on 56.

A special mention goes to Chris Moore. This was his first time back competing after major heart surgery at the end of last year. Not only was it great to see him back at the lake, but he finished in a very creditable 6th place overall.

Thanks go to our visitors from Fleetwood, Rotherham, Barrow in Furness and Hull.

Thanks also to Brian Cheetham and his race team; they did a splendid job.
